Detached from the world. Attached to God. What does this mean? Does it mean that we’re to cease all communication, and interaction with those around us? No. Let’s break this down.
Detachment according to Merriam-Webster (n.d.), refers to “an indifference to worldly concerns”. As children of God, we are expected to live a life that is holy and pleasing in the sight of Almighty God. Hence, if we are expected to live such a life, we cannot participate in sinful activities, and engage in immoral conversations.
While it is almost difficult to be surrounded by likeminded people who are trying their very best to live a chaste, and holy life for Jesus Christ; we have the responsibility to stand firm in the faith, and to live righteously.
Romans 12:2 (KJV) says, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”.
If it is our desire to be detached from the world, and attached to God, we have to implement practical measures to accomplish this. While it may not be easy, daily practice will help us to see an improvement in our detachment from the ways of this world, and an attachment to Almighty God. Some practical measures include:
1. Waking up early to pray and talk with God.
The mornings are usually calm and quiet. During this time, one can have some ‘alone’ time with God. We can pray to God about our deepest desires, fears, and to ask for forgiveness of our sins, and protection. It is also a great way to start your day. We see in Mark 1: 35 where Jesus Christ prayed during this time too!
Mark 1:35 (KJV), “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed”.
2. Studying the Holy Bible.
By studying the word of God daily, we will explore and understand what are God’s desire for our lives, and how we should live as children of God. 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”.
3. Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with others.
We can spread the gospel of Jesus Christ wherever we go. Even if others may oppose what we are saying, still do the work of an evangelist. You may never know if that person may have a second thought, and repent of their sins.
1 Peter 3:15 (KJV) says, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:”
2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV) says, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God”.
2 Timothy 4:5 (KJV) says, “But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”
4. Forsake ungodly traditions and practices.
If we desire to be children of the Most High God, we have to leave behind the worldly traditions and practices of men. For example, majority of today’s popular music contains graphic, and explicit audio and visuals, which seeks to tear down the kingdom of God, and degrade his people. Most of the popular clothing being worn by men, especially women, and sadly, Christian women, are immodest. We cannot say we are of God, but yet the life that we live is saying otherwise. If we truly desire to live the life that God wants us to live, and to enter Heaven, we need to walk, talk, think, and dress like it.
1 Peter 2:9 (KJV) says, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;”
Romans 12:1-2 (KJV) says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”.
James 4:4 (KJV) says, “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God”.
Matthew 16:24-26 (KJV) says, “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
Brothers and sisters, let us practice living a holy life in the sight of Almighty God right now! Don’t wait until tomorrow, as tomorrow may very well be too late. Until then, may the Lord be with you.
